Joshua Benton is director of the Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard University. The Lab is an attempt to figure out a productive future for quality journalism online. While an IRP fellow, he worked as a staff writer and columnist for The Dallas Morning News, where he spent seven years. He has reported from 10 foreign countries and three times been a finalist for the Livingston Award for International Reporting. While covering Texas schools, he won five first places in the National Awards for Education Reporting, including its top overall honor. He has also won the Philip Meyer Journalism Award from Investigative Reporters and Editors. He previously worked at The Blade in Toledo.

A native of small-town south Louisiana, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Yale University, where he served as editor-in-chief of the Yale Herald.
